Overview
Inside Los Glaciares National Park, Perito Moreno covers about 250 square kilometres with an ice wall roughly 60 metres high. It is one of the few glaciers that is stable or even advancing, periodically damming the lake before the ice gives way. A network of boardwalks gives close views of the wall and the calving from several angles.
History
Named for the 19th-century explorer Francisco Moreno, it was protected when the national park was created in 1937 and inscribed on the World Heritage List in 1981.
