Overview
At about 1,900 metres and covering 1,240 square kilometres, Lake Sevan is the largest lake in the Caucasus and makes up roughly 4% of Armenia. Its deep blue water is ringed by meadow and mountain, and the 9th-century Sevanavank Monastery on the peninsula overlooks the whole lake. It is a summer escape for locals, with beaches and fishing-village restaurants along the shore.
History
A tectonic lake of volcanic origin, it saw several monasteries founded along its shores in the Middle Ages; irrigation diversions in the Soviet era lowered the level sharply before a tunnel scheme restored it.
