Overview
Founded in the 4th century with its surviving fabric dating to the 13th, Geghard includes churches cut entirely from the living rock, their interiors soaring where light falls through openings above. Fine carvings and animal reliefs frame the main church entrance, and the spring in the courtyard is still regarded by believers as healing. It joined the World Heritage List in 2000.
History
Founded in the 4th century by Gregory the Illuminator as the Monastery of the Cave, it became a religious and cultural centre of Armenia in the 13th century.
